Learning how to act, and role play can be beneficial in developing life skills, increasing confidence and improving language. Drama workshops are on offer together with occasional trips to the theatre.
Cooking and Activities
Learning how to cook different meals, from different countries and getting to enjoy eating them is something that we really enjoy doing. These classes also teach nutrition and enjoying a healthy diet.
Leisure activities are offered both in the Hub and the community. We invite views from the young people using Amity regarding various activities that are timetabled and based upon interest and demand.
Football, cricket and dance are popular choices. however, others activities can be included based upon your interest.
Therapy
We recognise the importance of feeling good and we are aware of the difficulties and struggles that can be experienced by people leaving their homes, countries and people they love. The therapy we offer at Amity is by an experienced, qualified therapist who has worked mainly with young people seeking asylum and refugees supporting them to cope and rebuild their lives. The service is confidential to the young person and the therapist
Counselling at Amityhub
Here at Amity Hub we provide a safe and reflective space where you will feel respected and supported to explore problems that you are experiencing. Our counsellor Becky has 13 years experience working with asylum seekers and refugees and ensures an inclusive culturally aware service which respects and values difference.
Having to flee your country of origin and enduring hardship can create nostalgic disorientation and emotions which can be difficult to make sense of. This can result in overwhelming feelings of loss, confusion, low moods, anger and frustration or even fear and terror. Not knowing how to respond to such emotions can often make us feel helpless and can risk losing a sense of purpose and meaning of life.
Asylum seekers and refugees can feel isolated and vulnerable due to pre-migration experiences (such as war trauma) and post migration conditions (such as separation from family) and difficulties experienced with the asylum process. Being able to talk to a counsellor who can listen and take an interest in your lives can be incredibly valuable.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the preferred approach used in treating some of the more prominent themes that asylum seekers/refugees present with, such as trauma, loss PTSD, anger, guilt and anxiety due to its strong research support and quick treatment timeline. Once clients learn how CBT works, they typically find that it can easily be applied to their own lives.
Amity also facilitate psycho-educational therapeutic workshops for the health and well-being of asylum seekers and refugees affected by war, conflict and violence. These groups will address emotional social skills, to better understand your situation, improve longer term rehabilitation and most importantly, to support each other through difficulties.
Psycho-education around mental health is essential for asylum seekers and refugees whose beliefs are often compounded by three factors: ignorance about the extent of mental health problems, stigma against those living with mental illness and mistaken beliefs that mental illness cannot be treated. Mental health manifests itself differently according to culture. Clients of Amity have expressed that talking about feelings was an alien experience often met with a reluctance to divulge information, not wanting to burden others with their worries and stress.
Counselling sessions offer an environment where you can express your feelings and gain deeper insight into your difficulties without judgement. The sessions are also confidential, so you can talk about things you might not feel comfortable discussing with anyone else. You can find out more by visiting AMITYhub, speaking to your social worker and support worker.
